Admirably staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it has zero great complications within the way of life down the very ugly name.” [ 8 ]

The latest film’s writer and director, Robert Rossen, creates good multidimensional chess games, getting mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) has worked at the casino and you can dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, brand new cast’s suavely regulated body language out-of like and you may hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can smartly assertive images (together with his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of your genre.” [ ten ]

Evelyn Keyes performs the good little woman whom brings out new best in your and Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and slinky vixen just who gets your on the jams. Thomas Gomez is oily since the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does yet another able trip as the a weary police inspector whom finally closes the way it is.
